Abd-el-Kader was an Arab emir born in Oran in 1807. When Alger was invaded by French troops, his father and he summoned the holy war and kept fighting for 15 years until he fell under Morroco troops in the battle of Isly in 1844. Abd-el-Káder was imprisoned in 1847 and taken to France. Napoleon III granted him his freedom in 1852 and since then he remained friendly with the French nation. He died in 1883.
