About cocktails

What is a cocktail?

Two cocktails.

It is a beverage made from different kinds of drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic ones. A good cocktail must not to include more than three ounces of liquor per serving and it must use fresh and comestible ingredients as much as possible.

If any drink exceeds the three ounces of liquor it is called a zombie drink. In general, the world of cocktails has developed a lot and you can now see a large variety of ingredients, decorations and —of course— recipes.

The legend of the cocktail

It's heard that a man won a cock fight and he asked his fellows over to his restaurant. It's said he asked his daughter to serve wine to everyone in the house, and that she was in trouble because she didn't have enough wine to serve everyone a same drink. Obliged to think fast, it's heard she got a tub and placed all the wine in it. She mixed it and she served that to her father's guests.

And, contrary to what she may have thought, their guests were delighted with the delicious drink.

When her father came to ask, she told him what she did with the wines. It's heard a cock was nearby while they were speaking and that one of its feathers fell from its tail to the tub of wine while they were there. "A cock-tail", said the father. And that's the origin of the name.

This must be a very, very old story. In fact, pirates and corsairs already knew cocktails in the beginning of the modern era.
