Look for something in a search engine and get your list of results: Where do you click? As every normal people, on the first page of results. If you don't find what you were looking for there, you can click back, refine your search or look at another page from the list until you can do it. It is something you do day after day, don't you? Most people do.

Now think about your business: You want sales, don't you? Now imagine your website is last on the search results, and your competitor's is first. Who will have more sales? The one who is first on the list or the one who is last? Pretty obvious, right? OK, welcome to the world of Internet marketing.

What is search marketing today

Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the predecessor of search marketing, is the name people gave to the set of efforts aimed at having a given website achieve better positions in search results pages. Today, Search Marketing (SEM) has superseded that and is including statistics, public relations and advertising techniques to have the company increase its sales (and justify the effort) and turn the optimization efforts into profits. So far, search marketing has proven to be effective if done consistently.

What you need to learn

If you want to start a search marketing program into your company, you need to keep these three things in mind:

+ Search engines do not search the Internet when you click 'search'. They look at indexes of web pages they have previously stored in their servers. So, the first goal of search marketing is to get a website's pages indexed.

+ Search engines will index better websites which are both well written and often updated. So, the second important thing to do is to check out the current Internet standards and correct or rewrite your website until you comply with them. Once you do that, try to modify your contents frequently.

+ Search engines are not more important than people. By far, this is the most important one. Many marketers, businessmen and consultants pursue achieving first place in search engines using even unethical techniques. You must not forget that your objective is to attract sales and profit to your company, not just visitors. So there is no need to have search marketing become an obsession.
